Great New Design
Here is a Timber-Frame (with SIPs) design I've just completed (shown here as a milled log/timber-frame combo). The client's lot is a peninsula surounded by beautiful water views on 3 sides. We designed the home to maximize the 270 degree of water views and to be as energy efficient as possible (within the existing parameters). The timber-frame will be douglas fir with 8.25" SIP walls and 12" SIP roof.

SIPs vs ICF
SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) and ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms) are two distinctly different building systems. There are also some distinct differences in assembly time and costs.
SIPS:
- require 3-6 weeks order and processing time
- assemble quickly (days)
- provide good sound R-values (6.5" Thk = R22 / 8.5" Thk = R28 / 10.25" Thk = R35 / 12.25" Thk = R46)
- can use SIPs to create the entire exterior shell structure (walls, roof and floor)
ICF:
- shorter lead time (many companies hold stock)
- assembled onsite and ready to pour concrete in days
- overall cost of this system is higher than SIPs
- true R-value is equal only the the R-value provided by the EPS foam (R-value of concrete is extremely low)
- rate of heat energy transfer through completed ICF wall is impeded by the concrete and therefor provides some energy efficiencies
- can only complete the walls (and foundation walls) with ICF; must create roof with other system
